The Castle of Platamon

The Platamon Castle is one of the most imposing medieval castles in Greece, built in a strategic location on the southern slopes of Mount Olympus, near Platamon, in the Pieria region. The castle dominates above the Thermaic Gulf coastline, offering a breathtaking view of the sea and the surrounding area.

The castle was founded during the Byzantine period, probably in the 10th century. Due to its location, it served as a military and administrative center, controlling the sea and land routes that connected Macedonia to Thessaly.

The circular central acropolis of the castle and the tall walls surrounding it are impressive. The large tower, which stands at the central gate, served as the main point of defense and observation. The castle also included residential areas, storage rooms, and churches, while various archaeological finds have been uncovered in the surrounding area.

Today, Platamon Castle is a popular tourist destination and is very close to our accommodation. As visitors, you can explore the walls and towers, admire the historical architecture, and enjoy the panoramic view of the sea and Mount Olympus. Every summer, cultural events such as concerts and theatrical performances are hosted, bringing life to the monument and connecting it with the modern era.
